Project 4: Photo Restoration and Colorization, Due Thursday, November 18thThe Concept: Repair and Colorize a photographThe Purpose: To learn photo retouching, color correction and colorization techniques.
1. Choose a black and white photograph that is in need of restoration. Scan the image so that the finished size will is 8X10 inches @ 300ppi (depending on the proportion of the image.2. Duplicate the image so that you are not retouching the original. Name the Background Layer "Original"3. Retouch the image using the various filters and retouching techniques to eliminate scratches and dust and other flaws.4. Use Adjustment layers enhance the overall tonality the image. Clip the adjustment layers to the original. Place the duplicate original file and the adjustment layers in a group. Name the group “Retouched”.5. Duplicate the retouched Layer Group name it "Colorized 1"6. Using Adjustment layers, colorize the images realistically.7. Duplicate the group. Name it Colorize 2. Using the same adjustment layers create a different colorized version, using a different color scheme.8. Composite all versions to one image: the original scan, the black and white retouched version, and the two colorized versions to one document as demonstrated in class.9. Concentrate on good color relationships. Avoid making the image appear garish, splotchy or unfinished. Make accurate selections. Make sure adjacent colors are seamless.10. Save the full sized version of the document with the four images as a psd. Make a copy of the document and reduce the size so that all images fit on an 8.5x11 page. Save as a high quality JPG document and submit the digital file to the drop folder.
